Challenge

The direct economic burden of COVID-19 hospitalization—including total charges, ICU costs, and factors predicting higher charges—had not been characterized in a large nationally representative US hospital population.

Solution

Target RWE researchers analyzed hospital chargemaster data from 152,770 COVID-19 inpatients to quantify total hospitalization charges and characterize demographic, clinical, and geographic factors independently associated with higher costs.

Impact

Quantifying the direct economic burden of COVID-19 hospitalization provides health economists, payers, and public health partners with the evidence base for cost-effectiveness analyses of therapeutic and preventive interventions.
